tr. facilities are adapted for disabled and/or persons with limited mobility

Last year, the Government of Lithuania adopted a law according to which carriers providing public transport services, when purchasing new buses, must provide a special seat for disabled and/or persons with limited mobility, so that these passengers can comfortably and safely use public transport.

Pursuant to the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on the Basics of Transport Activities (date of entry into force of the law is January 11, 2022), amendments to normative acts No. I-1863 21  “Public vehicles transporting passengers by road and inland waterways must be adapted for disabled persons and persons with limited mobility – they must be equipped with means of informing these persons, ensuring mobility and safe use of public transport in accordance with the requirements for the adaptation of public transport vehicles for the disabled and persons with limited mobility approved by the Minister of Transport.

This provision does not apply to public transport vehicles used for international transport”. These rules apply to public vehicles that are registered for the first time in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania after the entry into force of this law, except for cases where the procedure for purchasing vehicles is regulated by state legislation that was in force before this law entered into force.

Despite the fact that the Government has established a transition period for companies to change the means of transport available over time and adapt them for disabled and/or persons with limited mobility. Last year, the company already started changing buses adapted for disabled passengers or those with limited mobility, so that they could comfortably and safely use public transport on the routes of the cities of Alytus, Priene and Šiauliai. A total of 46 Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen Crafter minibuses with a special place for wheelchairs operate on these routes.

In the future, the company plans to change all the buses in the park to accommodate this category of passengers.
